What is a ROC Café?

A ROC Café is an initiative of Redeeming Our Communities - a multi-agency youth meeting place to provide diversionary activity for young people. They work well in areas with significant reports of anti-social behaviour or where there are insufficient activities for young people. A ROC Café is a great opportunity for joined-up work between local community groups, churches, the police, fire service, schools, local council and others agencies to provide a youth focused project that can have a significant impact on a community. The ROC Café has a significant track record in reducing crime.

ROC Cafés are already proving successful in towns and cities across the UK – they’re easy to start, fun to run and play a vital part in community transformation. We can provide a pack, guidelines, artwork and partnership agreement. Please contact us for more information.

"My real hope is that this initiative will play an important role in diverting some young people away from anti social behaviour and will provide an environment where they can meet and interact better with other members of the community including the church and special constable helpers. It is already a testament to what can be achieved when individual organisations are willing to come together for the benefit of the community."

-Inspector Richard Scholey, Rotherham South

HOW DID IT START?

The first ROC Café was opened in Dinnington, Yorkshire in 2007. Nichola Kirkham attended the National Launch of Redeeming Our Communities at the NEC in 2006. Debra Green, Director of Redeeming Our Communities, was invited to speak at a meeting of community members and it was clear that one of the greatest local needs was for provision of youth activities. Following the opening of the first ROC Café the area saw a 35% drop in crime and Nichola received an MBE for her work.

Activities include: Pool, table tennis, Game consols, DJ skills, dance, drama, clean up projects, climbing walls, cookery classes, guitar tuition, fuse ball, sports, image consultancy.
We are hoping to see the model adopted across the UK. To date we have 14 ROC Cafés.
